OOG & heavy-lift project cargo planned to the millimetre.
From single out-of-gauge units to multi-lift industrial projects — Shipmaster manages route surveys, special equipment, port approvals and marine insurance for the most complex cargo.
Shipmaster handles the full spectrum of project cargo — from single out-of-gauge (OOG) units to multi-lift engineering projects requiring months of advance planning. Our project cargo team has managed machinery weighing over 500 tonnes, reactors 40 metres long, and breakbulk movements requiring semi-submersible vessels.
We provide route surveys, port feasibility studies, load calculations, lashing and securing plans, specialist heavy-lift vessels, flat-racks, open-tops, mafis and ro-ro solutions — end to end. Every project cargo move is managed by a dedicated project manager with a minimum of 10 years in heavy-lift logistics.
Wind turbine blades (60m+), nacelles, tower sections, solar racking — specialist escort and route planning for India's renewables boom.
Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
What qualifies as project cargo or OOG cargo?
Cargo is classified as Out-of-Gauge (OOG) when it exceeds standard container dimensions: more than 5.9m long, 2.3m wide, or 2.4m high for a 20' container. Project cargo is a broader term covering any complex, high-value or heavy-lift shipment requiring custom planning, special equipment and multi-party coordination — such as industrial plant moves, infrastructure components or large machinery.
How far in advance do I need to plan a project cargo shipment?
For simple OOG shipments (flat-rack or open-top), 2–4 weeks lead time is sufficient. For complex heavy-lift moves involving breakbulk vessels, port authority approvals and inland heavy haulage, plan for a minimum of 8–12 weeks. Major industrial projects (multiple lifts, multi-port) typically require 3–6 months of pre-planning.
Do you provide marine insurance for project cargo?
Yes. We arrange marine cargo insurance under Institute Cargo Clauses (A, B or C) and specialist project cargo policies for high-value single lifts. For catastrophic or unique risks, we work with Lloyd's of London specialist underwriters to ensure full replacement value coverage including strikes, riots and civil commotion.
Can you handle project cargo movements entirely within India?
Yes. Our domestic project freight division handles port-to-site inland heavy haulage for imported project cargo, as well as factory-to-port movements for export. We have relationships with NHAI-approved heavy haulage operators, crane companies and escort vehicle providers across all Indian states.
What information do I need to provide for a project cargo quote?
To quote accurately, we need: dimensions (L×W×H) and weight of each piece, origin and destination, desired loading/delivery dates, any known dimensional restrictions (bridges, height, width on route), commodity/description, and whether dangerous goods certificates are involved. A drawing or photo is extremely helpful.
